As part of the Rapides-des-Quinze refurbishing project in Quebec, Voith-Hydro called on LDV's personnel who is highly skilled in hydropower. LDV provided design and on-site support services for the following:

  • Design maintenance and installation tooling (modeling, finite element stress analysis and calculations); 
  • Provide calculations notes for the official report;
  • Coordinate the work performed by the draftspeople to issue the required documents;
  • Address manufacturing non-compliance issues.

To deliver a high quality service and promote close collaboration and communication with the Voith personnel, LDV's engineer travelled daily to the Voith offices in Brossard.

Installation of Butterfly Valves at the Hydroelectric Power Plant

In 2010, Alstom-Power Canada was awarded a contract to design, manufacture and install two generating units for the Romaine-2 power plant. To validate the feasibility of the assembly sequence and the optimisation which the assembly of certain components represented, Alstom needed technical support to address the challenges posed by the assembly sequence.  

Alstom therefore mandated LDV Consultants to perform the design and engineering required to move and lift the butterfly valves at the Romaine-2 power plant. A structural analysis of the load cases and maximum strain calculations were also carried out. 

During installation, LDV was involved in the installation sequence modification process in order to make up for the one-month delay, due to late deliveries, in the planned schedule.

Technical Support for Tender of Synchronous Condensers for the Soldiers Pond Power Plant

Alstom is a recognized expert in the energy sector, especially in the field of hydroelectric power. Alstom-Power Canada, a subsidiary of Alstom, designs, manufactures, installs and commissions generating units in North America.

To secure the support of personnel highly experienced in hydroelectric power, Alstom called on LDV Consultants to perform the engineering work required for drafting the tender documents for the supply of synchronous condensers for the Soldiers Pond power plant. As part of the mandate, LDV carry out the following:     

  • Review specifications;
  • Carry out the preliminary design;
  • Calculations and estimates;
  • Source and select suppliers;
  • Supervise the engineers and designers;
  • Coordinate work with other disciplines. 

To deliver a high quality service and promote close collaboration and communication with the Voith personnel, LDV's engineers travelled weekly to the Alstom offices in Sorel-Tracy.

Finite Element Stress Analysis of a Pole

Delstar Énergie, a company owned by DELOM Group, is a recognized expert in the energy sector, and more specifically in the refurbishing and manufacturing of rotor poles and electrical components.

To secure the support of personnel highly experienced in hydroelectric power, Delstar Énergie called on LDV Consultants to carry out a finite element stress analysis (FEA) on a replacement pole for Units 27 to 36 of the Beauharnois power plant. As part of the mandate, LDV carry out the following:      

  • Complete the 3D modeling of the pole using SolidWorks;
  • Carry out a finite element analysis;
  • Review the stresses and strains on the pole, especially in the critical zones;
  • Modify the pole geometry and validate the changes using ANSYS;
  • Submit a report outlining the results of the analysis.

Project Description +

Resolute Forest Products (RFP) is a global leader in the forest products industry.  

Further to an extended production shutdown, LDV was called on to recommission the thermal power plant, which included: 

  • Boiler #7, 370 MMBtu/hr Capacity;
  • Boiler #12, 550 MMBtu/hr Capacity.

LDV carried out the following:

  • Reverse engineering, instrumentation, control, mechanical and electrical design;
  • Rehabilitate and obtain certification to CSA/ASME standards for the gas train, auxiliary equipment, boiler;   
  • Perform detail engineering (P&ID, specifications, non-destructive testing), and refurbish instrumentation, piping and mechanical equipment;
  • Provide schematics for electrical, instrumentation and control connections;
  • BMS, CCS, BCS and HMI programming;
  • Repair boilers;
  • Select and purchase the instrumentation;
  • Validate the combustion process and equipment;
  • Conduct operational checks and commission boiler #7.

Certification to CSA standards was successfully obtained.
